Mi bagua es Tubagua
So good to be here! Tubagua has been a lot of fun from the minute we set our packs down and looked out to the coast, framed between Puerto Plata’s mountain, Isabella de Torres, and palm trees. This is a very beautiful place, and it’s very exciting to be the first people to WWOOF here. We’re working with Tim, the owner, to help make the property more accessible to people who will visit or work here. He has some exciting ideas for the place. As well as already being a really rustic but beautiful “plantation eco-village”, he wants to turn part of the property into an exhibition farm. This would create a place where local people could come to learn about good, safe agricultural practices and alternative crops, as well as create a larger WWOOFing opportunity. Right now he’s starting to grow Moringa, a highly nutritious tree with a lot of reported health benefits that could be extremely beneficial here. There are also cabins and another common area being constructed at the bottom of the property. It should be a really great place to come volunteer in the future.
Right now there is a group of 30 International Student Volunteers staying here while they do volunteer work at schools in a nearby town. It’s been fun spending the days working hard then hanging out with the volunteers, the staff, and Tim’s children. There is a really good feeling between Tim and his employees, his family, and everyone enjoying their stay here. It’s cool to see a positive relationship between Dominicans and a non-Dominican who lives here.
